The word "narcissistism" in regards to vanity, heard through the lyrics in today's songs spanning over the final 3 decades started with the world and popularity of rap music that replaced R&B/Soul/Disco music as the #1 music genre in the US among African Americans and complete the age spread throughout the music industry to all genres of music.

You can go backwards to the former years and the real first commerically released rap song "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang and see that this was the expression and creativeness of rapping; of vanity and narcissistism throughout the rap lyrics (MC vs MC) on the microphone or DJ's on the turntables trying to outperform the former for street credibility and renown and as rap music went from the dance songs to dismal reality of the interior city urban ghetto streets and the rap lyric turned to the "in the raw" tangibleity of the streets then lyrics became more real and no longer being subdued sexual lyrics like The Isley Brothers "Between The Sheets", Diana Ross and Lionel Richie's "My Precious Love" (the figure of the call is not "two hearts that measure as one"). or anything Barry White or Teddy Pendergrass did.

And when NWA (Niggas Wit Attitude) introduced gangsta rap to the music industry, the lid was all off the pot and rap took a 360 turn in regards to any and everything goes and along with the lyrics of the Neo-Soul genre of R&B music and rock bands like Weezer because these are the lyrics that fans and consumers want since they have been completely raised on the lyrics in all popular genres of today's american music.

And as usual, White musicians, White singers and the music industry continues to imitate and buy from the musical creativity of Black musicians and singers no different than way back in the days of race music and Dot "The King" Presley, who was likely the biggest offender of copying/stealing Black music and songs and repackaging it for the White masses.

And let's not leave The Rolling Stones and the Beatles who were also musical thieves.

And in regards to this article, it seems that now that White singers and musicians seem to get taken up the mantle years ago and compose music lyrics to thisw day regarding narcissism and hostility in today's White pop music the saame way that Blacks have been doing for decades since the origin of rap/hip hop, now all of a sudden, it has becoome a growning concern or as Whites like to say "an ever growing problem andepidemic" in the White community since it directly affects going forth the identical same White teenagers and offspring White adults of today (even many in their 40's) who grew up listening to rap music (in which the White parents called a pasing "fad") and not so overly concerned or havecompletely abandoned their parents force feeding of their idols Frank Sinatra or Elvis Presley.

Stop worrying White people, Ted, Billy, Becky and Alice aren't going to hear to the lyrics from rock music, go completely rogue, become hard core gangsters or thugs, go out rob and shoot people.and the sex, abusing alcohol, lying, not listening to you, dating interacially, having babies and totally disrespecting you?

They are already doing that and have been doing it for years.
